The northernmost and most geologically mature of all the Hawaiian Islands is known as the "Island of Discovery" and the "Garden Isle". It is the 4th largest of the main Hawaiian islands with an area of 552.3 square miles and lies northwest of Oahu. It takes 20 minutes by air to get here from Honolulu. Kauai has golden sand beaches, a wildlife refuge open to the public, the wettest spot on earth in the Waialeale Mountains, and the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" - Waimea Canyon.
